Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) and the NHS Weight-Management
Find important information for you and your health
The NHS has started a phased rollout of a new weight-management medicine called Mounjaro (tirzepatide). At this stage, it will only be available to a very small number of people who meet strict national criteria.
Although NHS England has approved the drug, all GPs are waiting for information about how the drug will be provided to eligible patients, when, and for how long. The NHS in South East London (SELICB) are developing plans to be able to make this available to suitable people who meet specific clinical criteria to enable an NHS health professional to prescribe it.
While NHS South East London ICB are in the process of developing these plans, we ask patients not to contact the practice to request a prescription.

Who is eligible for Mounjaro on the NHS?
NHS England has set the criteria eligibility for the drug, which will be rolled out in Phases; this is national policy, which, all NHS prescribers are required to abide by. For the First Cohort (during 2025-2026), NHS England estimates that only 222,000 patients across the whole of the UK will be eligible for the injection.
In 2026 and beyond there will be gradually broadening of those eligible on the NHS.
You may be contacted if you meet all of the following:
- You are an adult (aged 18 or over)
- Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 40 kg/m² or above
- You have four or more of these health conditions:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- High cholesterol (dyslipidaemia)
- Cardiovascular disease (such as previous heart attack or stroke)
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
Only people meeting all of these criteria will be considered during this first phase of the NHS rollout. If you are eligible, you will be contacted by the locally-run Primary Care Weight Management Service managed by the local GP Federation, Improving Health Limited (IHL), over the coming months.
Who should not take Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. It must not be used by people who:
- Are under 18 years old
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC)
- Have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2)
- Are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients
What you need to do?
If you think you might meet the NHS criteria:
- Check your BMI: We must have a BMI recorded in your medical notes within the last 3 months. If we don’t have this, please book an appointment with our Health Care Assistant for a height and weight check.
- Do not stop any current medication without medical advice.
- Wait to be contacted: A search will be carried out across all local GP practices, and eligible patients will be contacted directly as part of the NHS rollout.
- Be patient: The NHS rollout is being introduced gradually across the country, and not everyone will be eligible or contacted straight away.
If your BMI is below 40
You are not currently eligible for Mounjaro on the NHS. However, we can support you with other weight-management services including:
- Healthy eating and lifestyle advice
- Referrals to local weight-management programmes
- Ongoing review and support from our Health Care Assistant or nursing team
Please book an appointment if you would like help managing your weight or to discuss other available options. We will continue to monitor NHS guidance and will contact patients if eligibility is expanded in the future.
